On its 25th anniversary, Bhangra Blowout will be held on April 7th, 2018 at the Lisner Auditorium in Foggy Bottom, Washington, DC. Bhangra is an exciting, beat-intensive music and folk dance style, originating hundreds of years ago in the Punjab region of South Asia. The dance is traditionally performed as a celebration during occasions such as Vaisakhi (the beginning of the harvest), weddings, birthdays, and other auspicious events. This art form has become a force of South Asian expression in the United States with both independent and collegiate teams forming throughout the nation. Our competition, Bhangra Blowout, is the oldest intercollegiate bhangra competition in the country and stands as one of the largest South Asian competitions in the country. As an entirely student-run event, it is the product of massive teamwork from members of The George Washington UniversityĆ¢??s South Asian Society. Each year, Bhangra Blowout supports a charity to which a portion of the proceeds from the show go. This year, the board has chosen to support The Malala Fund, and its mission of empowering girls to complete 12 years of safe, quality education. This year we are very excited to have 8 amazing collegiate teams from around the country compete. Our 8 Competing Teams: Bruin Bhangra CMU Bhangra Illini Bhangra Northwestern Bhangra Spartan Bhangra UNC Bhangra Elite Virginia Di Shaan at UVA VT Bhangra In addition to our competing teams, Bhangra Blowout 25 will feature performances from: GW Bhangra Virginia School of Bhangra In honor of the 25th anniversary, we are proud to announce our headliner act for the show: UIUC Chai Town
